About this course

During this class you will learn how to create an original felt artwork using wool fibres. You will learn how to use wool to create colourful textile pieces with pictures and patterns to your own design. The textile pieces you create during the class could be later developed to produce three-dimensional products such as hats, bags or scarves or could be displayed as a wall hanging or cushion cover.

By the end of the course you should be able to:
- have a good understanding of the processes involved in feltmaking
- know the materials and equipment required to make felt
- experiment with techniques to produce their own artwork
- be familiar with the work of contemporary and traditional craftspeople

There is no qualification for this course.

There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.

How will I be taught?

There will be demonstrations, group and individual teaching.

What do I need to bring with me?

Basic materials will be provided, some additional materials will be available to buy from the tutor. You will need to bring pen and pencils, scissors, needles and thread and a notebook. A digital camera would be useful, if you have one already. Please bring a packed lunch.

What do I need to join the course

For those who would like to try the beautiful art of feltmaking. The class is suitable for those who are completely new to feltmaking or have experience to a basic level and would like to learn a variety of techniques that they can use at home to create exciting textile artworks or accessories. Please be aware that the felting process uses detergents and wool products can contain lanolin.

About the Tutor: Sian Lewis

Siân Lewis is a designer and textile artist. She studied fashion at the Royal College of Art and Ravensbourne College of Art and Design and has10 years experience of designing and making competition dancewear including for Strictly Come Dancing. She has worked on costumes for TV, stage and film and has been teaching textiles and art since 2008. Sian is currently developing her own range of textile prints and accessories.
