About this course

TON/65191/G/LC History – Royal Figures Series – Lives of the Saxon Kings

In this short course, you will learn something about the leaders of English Saxon society prior to the Norman conquest in 1066. Beginning in the reign of Egbert, the first Bretwalda (or ruler of the British), we will discover more about figures such as Alfred the Great; Aethelred the Unready; Canute the Dane; Edward the Confessor and Harold Godwinson, last Saxon king of the English.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
• Place the Saxon kings within the wider context of British history
• Name some - or all - of the Saxon kings of England
• Explain some of the ties between Saxon England and Scandinavia
• Discuss whether or not England became a united nation under Saxon rule
