About this course

This Upholstery is an intensive course for those with experience to work on a piece of furniture of their own choice with one to one support. This 2 day course is for those with some experience of using webbing, horse hair and springing and want to spend the 2 days working to complete their projects. Demonstrations will be given on a individual basis to enhance the project you are working on.

How will I be taught?

Craft courses provide an opportunity for students to learn and develop skills, techniques and understand how to design for a chosen craft to a higher level. You will be encouraged to look at the work of other craftspeople and artists, both contemporary and historical and keep a sketchbook/ notebook to record goals/ ideas, processes and progress. There will be one to one guidance, group critiques and self-assessment against individualised learning outcomes for the course.
Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising craftspeople.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring a small project you are working on, plus a 4oz tack hammer, small pair of pliers, scissors, needle and cotton, pen and notebook. Please ask before buying large pieces of furniture as there is limited storage space available in the centre and we cannot accommodate sofas or settees and this is a three day course. Apart from pens and notebooks please do not buy books or equipment before the start of the course. A small charge is made for tacks and string. Most upholstery materials are usually available to be purchased at the centre.
If you leave your Upholstery project in the centre you do so at your own risk

What do I need to join the course

Just an interest in upholstery and a small item of furniture you would like to work on. This course is for the more experienced student to work on their individual projects with more personalised tuition not for a beginner.
It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please speak to a member of staff.

About the Tutor: Philippa Saddler

Philippa Saddler holds a Postgraduate Certification in Education and a Diploma in Traditional Upholstery. Over the last few years she has renovated a wide range of furniture from art deco ‘cloud’ armchairs to piano stools. She believes upholstery can be an exciting journey to fully restoring furniture - working from its skeleton, to choosing fabrics and trimmings, all the way to creating a unique finished piece. Philippa's courses are very welcoming. There is no project too conservative or outlandish, even for beginners!
