About this course

Cambridge English: Preliminary (PET) is set at Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Therefore, this course will help you develop the skills to:
• understand the main points of straightforward instructions or public announcements
• deal with most of the situations you might meet when travelling as a tourist in an English-speaking country
• ask simple questions and take part in factual conversations in a work environment
• write letters/emails or make notes on familiar matters.

This course includes a preparation course at no extra charge to eligible learners aimed at strengthening vocabulary skills prior to the PET.

The exam for this qualification is provisionally set for summer 2020.

How will I be taught?

You will work on a variety of activities as a class and in small groups or pairs. This allows the tutor to attend to individual needs as well as to direct the learning of the group as a whole. A variety of teaching strategies will be used. You will be expected to do homework: an average of 5 hours per week
An individual learning plan of work (ILP) is developed between you and the tutor. The ILP will be regularly monitored and discussed with your tutor. Additionally, your work will be regularly marked by your tutor who will give you oral/written feedback.
If you wish to take the exam, please note that the exam fee is not included in the course fee and you will need to pay an additional fee once your tutor has confirmed that you are ready to sit the exam.

What do I need to bring with me?

English-English dictionary, ring binder for handouts and homework, paper and pen. You will also have to buy a course book. Your tutor will advise on the first session. You will need to have access to the Internet for your homework.

What can I do next?

Students may progress to other Cambridge courses. You will discuss progression with your tutor. For further information, you can email us at: skillsmaidstone@kent.gov.uk

What do I need to join the course

All learners are eligible. However, before you can enrol on an EFL course, there will be a free initial assessment to check that the course is at the right level for you. Please book an interview at your local centre.

We make every effort to keep our prices as low as possible and therefore regret that we cannot return payments to students who withdraw from a course. When you enrol, please understand that you are agreeing to pay the total price for the whole course, including all outstanding balances should you withdraw. The exam at the end of the year will entail additional fees.

For those who are already at A2 level of the Common European Framework of Languages. You can already understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g.
very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). You can already communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
You can already describe in simple terms aspects of your background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
