About this course

This Mixed Media course for beginners is designed with the 2D artist in mind and the various mediums that can be incorporated into Art work. There will be between two and five projects each term that are introduced with clear instruction and demonstration with historical and contemporary references. Some projects will be realistic or representational and others using abstract or expressionism as a starting point. This course is comprehensive and sets out to be interesting and enjoyable with a supportive critique at the end of each project. You will use mixed paper collage and various water and oil based paints alongside coloured pencils and charcoal to produce your Artwork throughout the term.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils.
You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you.

About the Tutor: Amanda Thesiger

Amanda Thesiger trained as a painter, and, after graduating from Maidstone Art College in 1986, undertook a postgraduate diploma in Painting at the Royal Academy, followed by an Abbey Major Award at the British School at Rome. She continues to paint and work in mixed media and has been a practising artist since 1991. She is involved in many different projects and workshops with different audiences in her role as an arts educator.

An artist with a fascination for natural history, Amanda Thesiger combines a process-led and an intuitive approach. Play, and a ‘what if’ approach, allow her to explore both the dynamic and intricate elements of landscape and natural form through open-ended drawing, painting, assemblage and printmaking. There is a kind of distillation process to her work, as each piece reveals itself gradually, leaving traces of discovery and change.
