About this course
A railway carriage is one of the safest places in the world – probably safer than your own home! This high level of safety has been bought at a cost, in terms of loss of life and destruction of railway property. The railwaymen and women have learnt from these tragedies, and over the past 200 years have brought the railway system to a very high state of safety.
This one-day course takes you from the earliest days, when trains were despatched by guess and by God, through many of the major accidents that inevitably occurred, showing you how the safety systems were gradually developed and introduced – sometimes with resistance from the railway companies – and explains the role of HM Railway Inspectorate, whose job it was to inquire into accidents and make recommendations. There will be a Handout.
