About this course

If it is a long time since you did any drawing or you would like to refresh your skills and find new approaches, then this is the drawing course for you. It is not a step-by-step 'how to draw' course but takes a free approach to suit all levels. Structured and experimental activities will introduce/develop key concepts such as line, tone, composition and mark making. Enjoy developing your knowledge of drawing skills and concepts, work with a range of media and experimental/discovery approaches, and explore various artists' drawings to inspire your own work.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
- draw using line and gesture
- plan a composition and consider spatial relationships
- draw using tone to establish structure and create solidity of form
- start to develop a personal approach to drawing.

There is no set ‘homework’, but you are welcome to practise and do further work at home.
There is no qualification for this course.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the needs of the course. Please do not buy anything especially for the course before it starts, but if you have any appropriate materials/equipment, please bring them along to the first session.

What can I do next?

A further drawing or drawing and painting course.

What do I need to join the course

This course is suitable for beginners and improvers. It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity for you to participate fully and get the most out of the course.
