About this course

Tunbridge Wells
Christmas Through the Ages
The celebration of Christmas has been a feature of the British calendar for over a thousand years – but how far back into that history can we date our favourite Christmas traditions and what other traditions have we lost or altered along the passage of those ten centuries? This short course will examine the origins and histories of some of our favourite festive customs, considering popular, religious and political and influences upon our seasonal celebrations.

By the end of this short course you should be able to:
• Name and describe one or more of the customs or traditions associated with Christmas in the British Isles
• Outline and debate the purported origins of one or more of these customs
• Describe and discuss the reasons for the continuation - or cessation – of one or more British Christmas customs

How will I be taught?

We shall use small group work, tutor input and discussion.
You will complete an end of course evaluation of your achievement of the session.

What do I need to bring with me?

Apart from a sense of curiosity and an interest in social history, you may wish to bring note taking materials.
