About this course

If you are interested in learning how to draw animals and birds then this is the course for you! In each session, with the guidance of artist Clare Langlands, a different drawing technique or approach will be demonstrated and explained, which you will then be able to put into practice using The Beaney's varied and interesting collection of paintings as a resource. There will be plenty of guidance and support and you will enjoy gaining an increased understanding of the portraits in the collection. The course will run on the following dates: 11/6, 18/6, 25/6 and 9/7.

By the end of the course you should be able to

• Demonstrate an understanding of facial proportion
• Practise different techniques for drawing features
• Use a selection of drawing materials with some confidence
• Engage with and respond to the work of other artists
• Generate ideas for further drawing using The Beaney collection as a resource.

There is no 'homework' for this course, but you might like to research artists and ideas referred to on the course in your own time.

There is no qualification for this course.

How will I be taught?

Each class will start in the Community Room at The Beaney, where the drawing activity and learning objective for that day will be demonstrated and explained. This will be followed by a question and answer session to ensure good understanding. You may produce some drawings in the Community Room, but the main aim is to take what you have been taught and practise in the galleries where you will enjoy gathering visual information and generating ideas for further drawing. There will be plenty of one to one guidance and feedback and at the end of each session, students will have the opportunity to share their ideas and experiences with a view to learning from each other.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please do not buy anything especially for the course until you have checked with the Canterbury Centre on 03000 412222, about a week before the course starts, that it is going ahead. Students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, a 2B pencil and an eraser to the first session. Your tutor will advise you on buying any additional materials, but these will need to be provided by you and will vary in cost according to the course requirements.

What can I do next?

Further Drawing or Art courses with KAE, or further drawing courses at The Beaney.

What do I need to join the course

This course is for beginners and those with a little experience of drawing. It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity for you to participate fully and get the most out of the course.
