Taster sessions
Taster sessions are either free or charge a nominal fee (it's amazing what you can get for a pound!). Come along and see what it's all about. Have a go at self-defence, yoga, creative writing or one of hundreds of taster courses held throughout the county.

Response Courses

Skills for Volunteers

This course will help you learn about becoming a volunteer. It will enable participants to recognise their current skills and knowledge and how they can be used for voluntary roles. It will help you to feel more confident about using skills and abilities, whilst also developing new ones. You will experience working as part of a team and access other learning opportunities and identify suitable volunteering opportunities. Additional personal development courses are running regularly such as Customer Service. These courses are run at Volunteer Centres around Kent.

Level 1 and 2 Food Safety in Catering

These courses will cover food safety hazards, temperature control, refrigeration, chilling, reheating, hot and cold holding, food handling, principles of safe food storage, food premises and equipment and legislation. It is a desirable qualification for anyone working in catering or with food, thinking of starting a business and very useful for those seeking work.

Photo ID must be shown at the start of the course.
Level 1 and 2 courses are certificated by HABC.

Level 1 runs for four and a half hours and Level 2 runs for seven hours.

Level 1 and 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace

These courses will give you a general introduction and understanding of Health and Safety and the hazards and risks encountered in the workplace. It is a useful and desirable qualification for those seeking work, already employed or volunteering. Level 1 is a solid foundation while Level 2 develops understanding and skills.

Photo ID must be shown at the start of these courses.
Level 1 and Level 2 courses are certificated by HABC.

Level 1 runs for six hours. Level 2 runs for seven hours.

Level 2 Principles in Manual Handling

This course will introduce you to the hazards and risks involved in manual handling. It will also outline what you can expect from a manual handling assessment. It will enable you to develop safer manual handling techniques in the workplace and leave you ready to undertake the practical part of the full Level 2 qualification.

This course is certificated by HABC.

The course runs for 7 hours.

Level 2 COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health)

(Control of Substances Hazardous to Health)

This qualification is designed for those who use substances hazardous to health at work. It is relevant in many industries, including hairdressing and beauty, cleaning and maintenance, engineering and printing. It introduces learners to substances, the risks and controls available and outlines what to expect from a control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) assessment. The HABC accredited qualification will prepare employees to contribute to the safer use of hazardous substances in their workplace.

This course is certificated by HABC.

The course runs for 5 hours.

Emergency First Aid at Work

This course is for those who wish to learn how to administer first aid in an emergency situation, through hands-on, practical teaching and demonstrations. A certificate will be issued upon satisfactory completion of the course which is then valid for three years.

This course is certificated by Qualsafe.

The course runs for 7 hours.

A shorter course Introduction to First Aid for Parents and Carers is also available.

Absolute Beginners IT

(Basic Computing Skills)

This course offers basic skills for those who have never used a computer or who lack confidence and would like to progress further. It is relevant for home use or as a starting point for further work-focused learning.

The course runs for two sessions of three hours.

Next Level IT

We also run a Next Level course for groups who are ready to progress beyond the basic skills. Areas that these may cover include: security, internet and email, word processing, web-based selling and on-line form filling.

Introduction to….. Working with Children / Working in Health and Social Care / Customer Service

These courses give an overview of the opportunities for working in a vocational area together with the qualities and skills required. They will also look at qualifications and avenues for further study.

These courses run for 6 hours or over 2 weeks of 3 hours.
