This KAE Studio course is designed for those attending purely for leisure purposes.
It is also aimed at those who have reached their permissible limit on our Tailored Learning progression Creative provision and do not want to move on to the range of Vocational or Accredited courses offered. 10.30 AM – 11.30 AM: Victorian Women Seaweed Artists
• Historical Context: A lecture on the Victorian era, focusing on women’s roles in natural history and art.
• Notable Artists: Study the works and contributions of prominent Victorian women seaweed artists.
• Discussion Session: Group discussion on the influence of these artists and their relevance today.
11:30 -1PM : Seaweed Foraging Expedition
• Introduction to Seaweed Foraging: Briefing on safety, equipment, and sustainable practices.
• Guided Foraging: Explore the shoreline of Margate to identify and collect various local seaweed species.
1.00 PM 2 PM: Lunch Break
• Participants can enjoy a packed lunch or explore local eateries in Margate.
2 PM –3.45: Drawing and Painting Seaweed
• Art Materials and Techniques: Introduction to the tools and techniques for drawing and painting seaweed.
• Live Demonstration: Watch a demonstration of sketching and painting seaweed by a professional artist.
• Hands-On Practice: Participants create their own seaweed-inspired artworks, guided by the instructor.
3:30 PM - 4:00 PM: Reflection and Sharing
• Artwork Showcase: Participants display their seaweed drawings and paintings for group viewing.
• Feedback and Reflection: Share thoughts and feedback on the day's activities and personal experiences.

Creative courses aim to build confidence through learning, allowing students to express themselves, think critically, and collaborate with their peers. By empowering our students to become confident, imaginative, and adaptable learners, we aim to develop students' curiosity, resilience, and adaptability, preparing them for future challenges, opportunities, and personal development.
This course offers participants an immersive experience into the world of seaweed foraging in the coastal town of Margate. The day will be divided into three main parts: foraging seaweed, exploring the history and contributions of Victorian women seaweed artists, and engaging in drawing and painting seaweed.
Course aims
* Observe the basics of foraging seaweed, including identification and sustainable harvesting practices
* Gain insight into the historical context and artistic contributions of Victorian women seaweed artists
* Develop skills in drawing and painting seaweed, inspired by the foraged specimens and historical artworks
You will also be asked to think of Personal Aims to individualise your learning experience, as well as other benefits the course may have.
What will I need for my course
• Comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for foraging
• Notebook and pen for taking notes during lectures
• Small pair of scissors and container for seaweed samples
• Watercolour paints/ brushes and piece of watercolour paper (paper can be purchased in centre )
• Lunch or money to buy lunch locally
What can I do next
Your tutor will advise you on follow-on courses relevant to their subject.
You can also attend Vocational or Accredited courses in a range of the Creative subjects on offer.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.

It is important to note that art and craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. Also, please make your tutor aware of any pre-existing health conditions that may impact on your learning.
