This tailored learning course is designed for those seeking vocational and employment opportunities in the field of creative writing and illustration. Over the course, beginners and those with some prior experience in creative writing will explore the art of creating picture books and first novels. This course is perfect for anyone who has a passion for storytelling and wishes to delve into the world of children's literature and illustration.
The course will cover all aspects of telling stories with both words and pictures together, including how to create and use a storyboard, how to create engaging characters, what the industry standards are around publishing and how to use colour and composition to aid your narrative.
Learners will gain the most from the course if they are prepared to undertake some work in their own time, as each session will include sharing their weekly tasks for supportive feedback from the group.

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Develop foundational skills in writing and illustrating picture books and first novels
* Understand the key elements of storytelling, including character development, plot structure, and visual storytelling
* Learn from industry professionals and receive personalized feedback on your work
* Build a portfolio of work that can be used for vocational and employment purposes

What can I do next

By the end of this course, participants will have a solid understanding of the fundamentals of writing and illustrating picture books and first novels. From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.
