If you love poetry and want to see your work come to life, this course is for you. You'll refine your writing style, learn about experimental poetry techniques, and gain essential skills in editing and book design. By the end of the course, you'll have your very own chapbook, ready for printing. If you're excited about developing your poetry and seeing tangible results, then this course is definitely for you!

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Refine your poetic voice through various exercises and workshops and write poems inspired by different styles of experimental poetry
* Acquire foundational skills in editing and designing a chapbook using tools like Affinity Suite and Inkscape
* Commit to 1-4 hours of homework each week to develop consistent writing habits
* Improve your ability to use essential software for writing and design, including Microsoft Word or WPS Office
* Finish a chapbook, ready for printing and sharing

You will also be asked to think of Personal Aims to individualise your learning experience, as well as another benefits the course may have.

What will I need for my course

You will need a notebook for every class and a laptop for most sessions. Your laptop should be capable of running the free trial version of Affinity Suite, Inkscape (an open-source graphic design program), and either Microsoft Word or WPS Office (a free alternative to Microsoft Office).

What can I do next

Your tutor will advise you on follow-on courses relevant to their subject.
You can attend further Beginners courses which will cover additional skills at Beginners’ level and use those you have already learned in different ways to help perfect them or progress to Improvers courses.

Additional Information

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.

For Health & Safety, please do not wear open toed shoes.

It is important to note that art and craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. Also, please make your tutor aware of any pre-existing health conditions that may impact on your learning.
