Who can join this course
This KAE Studio course is designed for those attending purely for leisure purposes.
It is also aimed at those who have reached their permissible limit on our Tailored Learning progression Creative provision and do not want to move on to the range of Vocational or Accredited courses offered. THIS COURSE IS SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS
By the end of the course, you will have gained the necessary skills and knowledge to continue exploring the craft, progressing onto another course, and continuing to develop your skills to a higher level. You will feel confident in creating your own designs and experimenting with the new skills and techniques you have gained.
This course will teach you to design and create your own mosaic 2D and 3D artwork, giving you an understanding of how to cut and assemble mosaics. Learn about the history of mosaic and the endless possibilities that tesserae patterns provide.
Let your imagination run wild, upcycle your old mirrors and frames, create garden décor or even make yourself a mosaic house sign!
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
· Produce a to scale design for a glass mosaic.
· Understand the types of tiles used in mosaic.
· Be able to safely cut and arrange glass, adhering to the health and safety of the workshop.
· Demonstrate correct use of Grout.
· Complete a glass mosaic design.
· Understand how to transfer mosaic skills into your own projects.

Course aims
By the end of the course you should be able to:
* There will be aims for the whole course and individual lessons, shared with you by your tutor.
What will I need for my course
Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting messy.
-Sketchbook and pencil
-Tile wheel cutters
-A glass cutter
-Glue – specifically designed mosaic glues are available or wood glue works as well
-Any broken ceramics or glass that you might like to use in your project. The tutor can advise on stockists for pre-cut mosaic tiles.
-Mosaic Grout
Blank projects to mosaic – These can range from laser cut wood blanks, to frames and mirrors or objects such as plant pots. Please note that 3D objects may require a stronger, quicker setting glue such as multi-purpose adhesive.
-Safety goggles, dust mask and disposable gloves.

Your tutor will advise you on follow-on courses relevant to their subject.
You can also attend Vocational or Accredited courses in a range of the Creative subjects on offer.
Additional Information
To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
For Health & Safety, please do not wear open toed shoes.
It is important to note that art and craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. Also, please make your tutor aware of any pre-existing health conditions that may impact on your learning.
