Who can join this course
For the Guitar (Improvers) course it is recommended that you have either:
a) Already completed the Guitar (Beginners Plus) course, or
b) Have equivalent experience, or
c) Taken a relevant grade (grade 1 or grade 2) in guitar playing
Is this course for me
This Guitar (Improvers) course builds on the knowledge acquired in the Guitar (Beginners Plus) course but is suitable for anybody who is reasonably proficient at playing melodies and chords and would like to take their playing to the next level.
It concentrates on developing both melodic and chord-playing skills, looking at how both aspects are used by guitarists in most forms of popular music. You will learn how scales can be used to form the basis of guitar solos and licks, whilst developing a repertoire of common and intermediate level chords.
By the end of the course, you will have a good grasp on the fundamentals of improvising solos (aka: 'lead' guitar playing), and performing chord charts (aka: ’rhythm’ guitar playing) in a range of styles from pop, rock, blues and country music.
To benefit fully from this course, students are advised to practice the exercises and pieces in their own time.
This course will be taught by Gareth Heritage. Gareth is the director of F#9 (Qualified Music Tuition), a Kent and S.E. London itinerant music school specialising in graded examination preparation. He is the guitarist and bassist for two bands currently performing across the South East, and a former examiner for Trinity College London.
Gareth has had a comprehensive career in music education, teaching in the primary, secondary and higher/further education sectors.
