Please refer to our Course details for the subject area, and guided learning hours assigned to this course.
If you have already reached the maximum guided learning hours in this subject area and level, you should look to progress to courses at Level 1 (Improvers).
This course is aimed at those new to Drawing and Painting, little or no previous experience of either Drawing or Painting is needed. Those with some experience or have already completed Beginners courses should consider our range of Level 1 (Improvers) courses. Everyone is welcome. No knowledge or previous experience required. It is important to note that art courses are practical and
require a degree of manual dexterity. A positive, ‘what if’ attitude will be helpful as this course requires curiosity and play as helpful factors when developing creativity.
Is this course for me
Our Creative Intent
Creativity is an essential aspect of human expression and plays a crucial role in fostering well-being and a sense of purpose.
The ambition of the Kent Adult Education Creative curriculum is to engage the community through an energetic and diverse programme offer planned to meet the varied needs and interests of Kent’s communities, thereby ensuring high quality learning is delivered across the county in dedicated adult education centres, online and in neighbourhood settings.
Creative courses aim to build confidence through learning, allowing students to express themselves, think critically, and collaborate with their peers. By empowering our students to become confident, imaginative, and adaptable learners, we aim to develop students' curiosity, resilience, and adaptability, preparing them for future challenges, opportunities, and personal development.
This course is designed to teach learners the basic techniques to drawing and painting and develop confidence and skills through a range of weekly tutored lessons. You will explore a range of materials, colour creation, light, and shade, as well as artistic styles, applying techniques and tips to landscape, still life and personal projects. This course will be informative, challenging and fun. This course will be delivered in person. It introduces and/or expands a learner's knowledge of simple print-making techniques
- and explores the relationship between drawing, painting, and printmaking. Students will learn new methods for making series of
printed images without the use of a press, through less-traditional and more experimental frottage, monoprint and collagraph, sampling textured materials and objects. They will be introduced to contemporary artists working with these exploratory printmaking approaches and will be encouraged to work with an openended and imaginative style.
Course aims
By the end of the course you should be able to:
* Explain the health and safety considerations for all resources and tools used
* Create a series of images using different techniques: frottage, monoprint and collagraph
* Select a variety of objects or surfaces which will give good results for mark making
* Develop compostion and organisation skills to create an image
You will also be asked to think of Personal Aims to individualise your learning experience, as well as another benefits the course may have.
What will I need for my course
Students have to cover the cost of their own materials and these will vary according to the type of work produced, but will be minimal. The tutor will advise on the approximate costs of each project. Please bring any materials and equipment you have that might be appropriate to the course. All students should have a sketchbook of at least A4 size, preferably with a hard cover, ring
bound and containing good quality cartridge paper and a selection of wax crayons to the first class.
What can I do next
Your tutor will advise you on follow-on courses relevant to their subject.
You can attend further Beginners courses which will cover additional skills at Beginners’ level and use those you have already learned in different ways to help perfect them or progress to Improvers courses.
