Who can join this course

No previous experience is required. This course is for anyone who wants to learn how to communicate with Deaf people or who simply has an interest in Sign Language. This course is also suitable for those who have attended a Sign Language Taster or Basics course. You will need to have the ability to move and manipulate your fingers and hands to make the appropriate handshapes, ask if you are unsure. You should also seek advice before enrolling if you have severe dyslexia or other learning difficulties.

Is this course for me

If you would like to be able to communicate with the Deaf community more effectively, this course leads to the Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language. By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Greet Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) and communicate about familiar day-to-day topics including the weather, transport and directions (incorporating use of numbers).
- Communicate with Deaf people using BSL about people, animals and objects in the home.
- Communicate with Deaf people in BSL about interests and activities using numbers in relation to age, time, money and calendar.
- Communicate with Deaf people in BSL about school, college or work including directions and refreshments and using numbers in relation to time and calendar.

Non teaching dates

This course is scheduled to not be running on the following dates:

  • Saturday, 12 April 2025
  • Saturday, 19 April 2025
  • Saturday, 31 May 2025

Additional Information

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
