Who can join this course

Kent Family Learning courses and workshops are free for parents, carers and grandparents, who are aged 19 years and above and who live in Kent and are intended to help create a better family life. All courses are funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency and are FREE to eligible learners. To be eligible you must be able to answer ’yes’ to BOTH statements below:

1. Have you been living in the UK or an EEA country continuously for at least 3 years prior to the learning start date, and
2. Are you a UK national, or Irish national or do you have pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme?

Please speak with us if you cannot answer ‘yes’ to both statements as you may be able to gain a place if you can provide suitable residency evidence.

Course aims

This course will offer:

* Look at how phonics is taught in schools with the emphasis on synthetic phonics but including other key strategies
* Learn the accurate pronunciation of the 44 phonemes and how to use them when blending and decoding words
* Understand what is meant by tricky words, CVCs, synonyms, alliteration and other English terms and vocabulary which may be new and unfamiliar
* Since this course can run over different time frames the aims will be amended to fit in with the time allocation and the learner requirements

For face-to-face sessions, we will provide the resources, but you are welcome to bring additional items if you would like to.

Additional Information

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.
