Who can join this course

Everyone is welcome to join the course. The course is suitable for absolute beginners. You do not
need to have any previous computing knowledge or experience to attend.

Is this course for me

This 'The Basics - First Steps to Using a Computer' course provides you a simple introduction to
computing in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. The course will cover many essential skills needed to
operate a computer, starting with how to turn it on, understanding the keyboard and using a mouse.

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Identifying the key components of the computer
* Navigating the desktop
* Exploring the keyboard
* Opening the Windows progam
* Gain confidence in your basic ability to navigate a computer

What will I need for my course

A notepad and pen. It is also recommended that you have access to a computer and internet to be
able to practise between sessions what is covered in the lessons.

What can I do next

'Further Steps - Increase Your Computing Skills' is available upon successful completion of this course.
'Further Steps' will cover simple word-processing and using spreadsheets.
During your course, your tutor will suggest other appropriate progression routes for you based on your
learning aims.

Additional Information

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.
