Who can join this course

This KAE Studio course is designed for those attending purely for leisure purposes.

It is also aimed at those who have reached their permissible limit on our Tailored Learning progression Humanities/Social Science provision and do not want to move on to the range of Vocational or Accredited courses offered. In 1919, writer Virginia Woolf and husband Leonard bought Monk’s House, Rodmell, Sussex, at an auction in nearby Lewes for just £700. This was the house she was to own for the rest of her life. Our walk starts outside Monk’s House, stopping at various points of interest in the village. We will discuss her life in Sussex, the characters she came to know and what the area came to mean to her. Next, following a route regularly used by Woolf, we will take the country path to the nearby hamlet of Southease.
Then, from Southease, we take a short walk along a tarmacked section of the South Downs Way to a bridge crossing the River Ouse. Here, we can stop and appreciate the landscape that inspired not only Woolf but others such as watercolourist Eric Ravilious, who stayed in nearby village of Beddingham. From there, we return to Rodmell.

Our Creative Intent
Creativity is an essential aspect of human expression and plays a crucial role in fostering well-being and a sense of purpose.
The ambition of the Kent Adult Education Creative curriculum is to engage the community through an energetic and diverse programme offer planned to meet the varied needs and interests of Kent’s communities, thereby ensuring high quality learning is delivered across the county in dedicated adult education centres, online and in neighbourhood settings.
Creative courses aim to build confidence through learning, allowing students to express themselves, think critically, and collaborate with their peers. By empowering our students to become confident, imaginative, and adaptable learners, we aim to develop students' curiosity, resilience, and adaptability, preparing them for future challenges, opportunities, and personal development.

Course aims

* An overview of the life, times and works of the chosen writer
* An insight into their time in Sussex
* The ability to recognise and identify how Sussex inspired them
* This walk does not go into Monk's house as it is owned by the National Trust

You will also be asked to think of Personal Aims to individualise your learning experience, as well as other benefits the course may have.

What will I need for my course

This is a leisurely, interactive walk with plenty of opportunities for questions and discussion. The route between the villages of Rodmell and Southease follows a country path that gets muddy in rainy weather. There are a number of stiles. You will need to wear appropiate footwear, not sandels, carry water and snacks if you need to eat during or directly after the walk. Directions to the start of the walk will be emailed out at least a week before the day of the course.

What can I do next

Your tutor will advise you on follow-on courses relevant to their subject.
You can also attend Vocational or Accredited courses in a range of the Creative subjects on offer.
