Meet our tutors - Sophie Jonas-Hill
Meet our tutor Sophie. Sophie has been involved in the creative industries all her life, from blacksmithing and silversmithing, to pattern cutting, illustration and art and creative writing. Sophie used to run her own business creating bespoke wedding gowns and jewellery and has had three novels published. Sophie says "Much like many adult learners, I went back into education later on and studied for an MA in illustration, so I'm passionate about life long learning." One of Sophie's previous creative writing students has gone on to study a creative writing MA at Dublin college which Sophie says "was a very proud moment for me!"
Sophie now specialises in ink drawing and painting and is currently working on a children's book project with a UK publisher.
KAE: Who is your biggest inspiration and why?
Sophie: I adore the work of Aubrey Beardsley, his line work is incredible, and love the work of Hilary Mantel.
KAE: Why do you enjoy teaching?
Sophie: I love the relationships we build during the course, and the discussion that teaching provides. It's wonderful to see 'lightbulb' moments, when something clicks for a learner and they see the world in a new way. It's a great privilege to be able to help people achieve life long dreams and connect with their creative side.
KAE: What is your approach to teaching?
Sophie: I strongly believe that learners achieve the most when they can set their own beliefs within the structure of a course. When we have a goal in mind, we're motivated and passionate, and have a reason to learn. I'm also a great believer in learning from each other, that positive discussion and feedback is priceless!
KAE: What makes your classes different?
Sophie: I think my courses are different because of the way I can break down complex subjects into simple steps and we work through ideas in a supportive and positive atmosphere.
KAE: What do your courses involve?
Sophie: My courses follow a structure, but they are designed to allow learners to create their own pathway through that so they can tailor the courses to meet their own learning goals.
