This 2-Year Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling CPCAB Level 4 BACP APQ - Person-Centred Focus course takes place in Maidstone Adult Education Centre.

This qualification will give you the knowledge, skills and competencies to work as a therapeutic counsellor in an agency context. On completion of this 2-year course, you will gain a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.

This course is BACP Approved, which involves some additional criteria and an exam at the end of Year 2, or once you have completed 70 of your 100 client hours on placement. This element is designed by CPCAB to support qualification standards and enhance the pathway to becoming a registered BACP Counsellor (see https://www.cpcab.co.uk/qualifications/bacp-approved-tc-l4 for further details). The cost of the course includes the BACP approval.

On this course, you will strengthen your knowledge of ethical boundaries and the BACP ethical framework.

You will develop a profound understanding and experience of counselling supervision through working as a trainee counsellor in the community within a counselling placement.

You will further explore your own self-awareness, for example:

• How you relate to others?
• What you need to develop within yourself to develop the capacity to therapeutically engage with clients?
• What barriers you hold that serve to reduce your ability to hold and contain a client's emotional pain?
• Explore and challenge your own issues, fears and prejudices in order to work with client diversity.

Please note: You can apply for the Student Loan for this course, which will mean that your initial costs are reduced and you would need to pay back the loan only once you are earning a certain amount. However, there will be a separate fee to pay to Kent Adult Education. We provide an easy payment plan to help you pay the initial costs, which can be spread over 6 months. The cost of the course includes a text book.

How will I be taught?

Assessments:
You will be assessed using various means including written assignments, a weekly reflective learning journal, presentations and observed practice.

You will be given a Fitness to Practice assessment at the end of year one and once passed, you will then be responsible for applying to your chosen counselling agency for a placement. You will need to complete 100 hours to be fully qualified. After 70 hours you will be able to apply for the Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) assessment with BACP.

Kent Adult Education requires all agencies to provide you with a service framework which includes clinical supervision that meets the BACP guidelines for counsellors in training, as well as line management. CPCAB requires you to have 1.5 hours a month of individual (or group) supervision or 1-hour supervision per 8 hours of client work. In addition, you will require 30-50 hours of group training supervision as part of the course. You will need to successfully complete year 1 before going on to year 2.

Please Note: You need to commit to attend and self-fund up to 60 hours of personal therapy during the 2-year course. Your course tutors will discuss a suitable number of therapy hours on an individual basis. You should consider this cost when applying for the course.

Please Note: A minimum of 85% attendance is required on this course per year as well as the timely completion of assignments. We would not expect students to be absent for more than 5 classes per year or for more than two consecutive classes. A high level of commitment, up to 4-5 hours per week of self-directed learning outside of classes, as well as the time required for personal therapy and placement hours is essential. You should consider the time commitment required before applying for the course.

What do I need to bring with me?

A notebook and pen and/or a laptop.

For online courses, blended courses or classes which need to be moved online due to bad weather etc. you will need a computer/ laptop with a camera and access to Zoom.

On receipt of your completed application, if you meet the course requirements, we will arrange for you to have a robust interview with the course tutors. We will contact you by email about this.

The interview involves an honest discussion with the course tutors and a skills practice. The tutors will discuss the content and level of the course to ensure it is suitable for you and there is an opportunity for you to ask questions about the heavy commitment involved in this course.

Please Note: You should be aware that there may be more students interviewed than there are places for the course. We will choose the most suitable students; those who interview well and can show how they use their skills.

It is recommended that you don't enrol on this course if you have undergone a life-changing experience during the last 12 months, for example, a bereavement. Your emotional stability will be discussed.
