Exchange realistic descriptions for exciting visual experiences using mark-making, line, form, colour, texture and much more. Enjoy a series of practical exercises, with a wide range of materials, techniques and tools, that will help you to explore different approaches to abstraction and working in new ways.

This course is designed to encourage a personal response to creating abstract images and three-dimensional work. Open-ended and investigative, we will explore how materials, concepts and symbols contribute to making abstract artwork. We will also look at the origins of abstract art and consider how your own personal painting and drawing style can develop as a result of taking this course.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Select and use a range of materials and methods
• Recognise a variety of abstract styles
• Make experimental abstract studies from a variety of source materials
• Produce abstract drawings, paintings and sculpture

There is no set ‘homework’, but you are welcome to practise and do further work at home.
There is no qualification for this course.
There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park and on-street parking nearby.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Amanda Thesiger

Amanda Thesiger trained as a painter, and, after graduating from Maidstone Art College in 1986, undertook a postgraduate diploma in Painting at the Royal Academy, followed by an Abbey Major Award at the British School at Rome. She continues to paint and work in mixed media and has been a practising artist since 1991. She is involved in many different projects and workshops with different audiences in her role as an arts educator.

An artist with a fascination for natural history, Amanda Thesiger combines a process-led and an intuitive approach. Play, and a ‘what if’ approach, allow her to explore both the dynamic and intricate elements of landscape and natural form through open-ended drawing, painting, assemblage and printmaking. There is a kind of distillation process to her work, as each piece reveals itself gradually, leaving traces of discovery and change.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound, and a variety of pencils. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you.
