This Active for Life course is delivered face-to-face from Broadstairs Adult Education Centre. The course has been designed by and is delivered in partnership with Gemma Girdler of GG's Fitness and is a low to medium impact cardio class, using resistance equipment to tone and sculpt your body. Students will be told the health benefits of cardiovascular and muscular strength and endurance training, performance technique, basic equipment safety and movement to music.

By the end of this course students should be able to:

- Use basic resistance equipment safely and be aware of Health and Safety practise,
- Perform muscle, strength and endurance exercises, and locate muscle groups,
- Practise cardio moves and exercise independently to music with minimal guidance,
- Recount at least three ways in which exercises can benefit health and wellbeing,

How will I be taught?

You will be taught by a qualified instructor. Teaching methods will include demonstration, explanation, discussion and times for question and answer sessions. Your tutor will demonstrate movements and talk you through all exercises. You will be required to complete a pre course health and fitness questionnaire and during the lessons you will be carefully observed to ensure that you are working safely. You will also be encouraged to monitor and record your progression through the course and your tutor will also give you feedback on your progress. At the end of the course you and your tutor will assess the progress you have made.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need supportive, comfortable clothing that allows ease of movement. Denim jeans, formal trousers, skirts or dress are not suitable for this activity. You should wear shoes with a soft sole. Sandals, boots or any footwear with a high heel are not recommended. You may be advised not to take part if you are not dressed appropriately.

What can I do next?

Your tutor will advise you on the appropriate follow-up course. Enrol early as places cannot be guaranteed.
During your course your tutor will offer guidance in relation to your personal progression route. Courses are designed to progress you to further study or into employment. In addition some of our courses support access to Further and Higher Education opportunities. KAE web site has information about these courses and developing your own business. Please speak with your tutor if you have an interest in self-employment or an interest in developing a career. We can also help you access the National Careers service.

What do I need to join the course

No previous experience is necessary. The course has been specifically designed for anyone over the age of 55 who would like to improve their fitness and health and enjoys group exercise classes. The content will be tailored to individual needs and capabilities of students.

Please take a moment to consider the list below. If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a medical practitioner whether it is suitable for you to undertake an exercise programme and bring a referral letter from your doctor to your tutor. If you have not checked, or if it is not suitable, please do not participate in this class.

- Do you often feel faint or have spells of dizziness?
- Are you receiving medication for any condition?
- Do you have high blood pressure?
- Do you have a bone or joint problem, such as Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Back or knee
problems?
