This course will introduce basic hand building skills to be able to create ceramic coiled forms and either a slabbed or a pinched forms. You will look at the different types of clay, to identify what clay you will require for the projects set by your tutor. You will produce a minimum of 3 different surface design techniques eg impressing, combing, sgraffito, piercing, burnishing. Each piece will be decorated and glazed.

By the end of the course you will be able to -

- Select and prepare clay for hand-built forms
- Design and create minimum of 4 ceramic forms ready for surface decoration
- Make secure joins in clay on the forms you create
- Experiment and produce different surface design techniques eg impressing, combing, sgraffito, piercing, burnishing.
- Explain the health and safety considerations and precautions for the tools and materials and equipment you have used in the pottery studio.

Please note, clay is charged by the wet weigh, prior to firing. Only clay supplied by Kent Adult Education is allowed in our potteries.
While we aim to fire products in a timely manner, we cannot foresee technical or mechanical failures. When these do occur, we endeavour to resolve them as quickly as possible.

How will I be taught?

At the start of the course, you will work with your tutor to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set out your prior learning and what you want to achieve by the end of the course alongside the learning outcomes listed above. It is vital that you engage with this process to achieve the outcomes and successfully complete the course.

You will complete tasks and assignments according to the course syllabus to successfully achieve the outcomes, with guidance from the tutor.

You will receive initial and ongoing feedback from your tutor. It is key that you also monitor and assess your progress throughout the course, to ensure your learning needs are being met and course and personal outcomes are being achieved.

There is no final exam for this course, level 1 certification is awarded on achievement of the course outcomes listed above.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring a sketch book, note pad, pen and apron. The pottery studio will have the basic tools required for this course. You may want to bring any of your own tools if you prefer.
There is a reasonable charge per kg for the clay, this covers the cost of the clay and its firing and glazing of any work you produce.
