Do you want to be able to use your Chinese Mandarin in a range of real life situations? This is the aim of our Chinese Mandarin Upper Intermediate course. You will benefit from exchanging face to face with a supportive tutor and others as you practise speaking and enjoy learning the language.

According to the results of the Initial Assessment and the needs and interests of the group, students should be able to achieve four of the following:

• Describe (people, places, situations, events etc) in the present and past tense
• Make comparisons
• Exchange/extract key information on a variety of topics/situations
• Use the imperative to give and follow instructions
• Make arrangements using different tenses
• Express an opinion
• Express hypothesis ( if clause …)
• Deal with emergencies, problems and complaints
• Listen and respond to information from a range of sources (telephone messages, news headlines/public announcements, instructions, conversations)
• Grasp general meaning of written material (e-mails, mobile text messages, letters, notices, leaflets etc)

Grammar will be expanded. You will learn to use expressions and forms appropriate to the language using present, future and some past tenses. You will be given small amounts of homework (1 hour max) each week to reinforce classroom learning.



How will I be taught?

A variety of teaching methods will be used to satisfy all learning needs.
Students will be watch videos, listen to tapes/CDs or read text depending on the type of assessment.

What do I need to have with me?

Handouts will be provided but have writing material at hand. The tutor could suggest a textbook after the first session.

What can I do next?

We offer a continuation course with a Chinese Intermediate.
During your course your tutor will offer guidance in relation to your personal progression route. Courses are designed to progress you to further study or into employment. In addition some of our courses support access to Further and Higher Education opportunities. KAE web site has information about these courses and developing your own business. Please speak with your tutor if you have an interest in self-employment or an interest in developing a career. We can also help you access the National Careers service.

What do I need to join the course

This course if for learners that have studied Chinese before on their own or with other providers.
Preferably you will have either completed our Beginners Plus courses or one year of Intermediate or who have studied GCSE (D/E grades) or have studied the language for approximately 120/150 hours and who can express themselves and understand simple information relating to personal, work or social matters.
Students should already be able to understand and respond in the language to general /specific information in a range of everyday and work-related situations, speak using a range of routine structures and commonly used expressions, read to extract general and specific information, write to produce simple text and use the past and future tense in simple conversation. Students should have a grasp of grammar such as comparatives, superlatives, regular and irregular verbs in the present, past and future tense and conjunctions.
