Learn how to create a design using the beautiful art of shibori dyeing. Shibori is a Japanese method of tying and dyeing fabric to create both pattern and texture, taking a flat piece of fabric and manipulating it into sculptural forms. On this course you will investigate a variety of shibori techniques such as stitching, binding, knotting and clamping to create three-dimensional textures on polyester fabrics and beautiful resist-dyed patterns with traditional indigo coloured dyes on cotton fabric and garments.

By the end of the course, students will:
- Explore and familiarise the work of contemporary and traditional crafts people

- Successfully dye up different fabrics using suitable dyes and techniques (ie shirbori/indigo)

- Identify the best fabrics and fibres to use with the different techniques

- Experiment with dye and thread to create individual pieces and creative swatches.

- Produce a final outcome using at least one of these techniques

- Practice safe use of tools at all times in the studio

There is no qualification for this course.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will keep a notebook/ sketch book to draw your designs. Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time.

What do I need to bring with me?

Students have to cover the cost of their own materials and are generally able to purchase these through the centre. The cost will vary according to the scale of the work produced, but the tutor will advise on the approximate costs of each project. Please bring any materials and equipment you have that might be appropriate to the course. All students should bring a small note book to keep notes of processes and techniques. It may also be beneficial to bring some own sourced fabrics with which you might like to print onto. Your tutor will advise how and which techniques may be suitable for your individual piece of fabric.

What can I do next?

Courses are designed to progress students to higher levels of the craft and also to support application to Access to Art and Degree Foundation courses or relevant Craft, Art and Design Degree courses. During your course, your tutor will guide you with additional information regarding career opportunities, self employment and further education. You can also view our Microsoft Sway for Creative Crafts CEIAG (Careers, Education, Information, Advice and Guidance)
