Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Maria Smith

Maria has worked in Floristry for over 25 years.
With a background in art and design Maria’s love for colour and texture really comes into play when it comes to her floristry. She particularly likes to work in a wild and rustic way drawing inspiration and materials from her local natural surroundings.
She trained in a busy London Florist in the late 1990’s alongside a Dutch designer, often producing floral work for wedding magazines, celebrities and even the royal family. Later, she went on to open her own florist shop, specialising in weddings and events.
Maria enjoys working on large installations, be it decorating shop fronts with statement pieces or displays at flower festivals.
She continues to work as a freelance florist, as well as sharing her passion for floristry by teaching workshops.

Maria has also worked with textiles for over 40 years. She has a work studio in Folkestone where she spins and dyes her own yarn as well as knits, weaves, and crochets. Maria’s work is driven by colour and texture and will draw inspiration from her coastal surroundings. She works with natural raw materials and spins her own yarns to use in her art. In addition to the creative challenges of her work Maria enjoys the slow, meditative nature of textiles, promoting deep relaxation for body and mind.
