This course is designed to teach students the basic techniques of drawing and painting. The aim of the course is to develop a range of fundamental skills through a variety of weekly tutored lessons. Students will explore a range of exciting materials, colour creation, light and shade, as well as artistic styles, applying techniques and tips to landscape, still life and personal projects.

You will be introduced to a variety of genres and artists.

This course will be informative, challenging and fun.

By the end of the course students should be able to -
-Demonstrate how to mix at least 3 new colours from the three primary colours.
-Create a drawing of a still life study using negative space and perspective.
-Blend watercolour or acrylic pigments to match resource images.
-Demonstrate at least two different techniques to create a visual impression of an image.

How will I be taught?

Each class will commence with clear learning outcomes and usually a tutor demonstration, taking you step by step through the process. One to one guidance and feedback is an essential part of learning and development, along with group discussions and informal critiques. You will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook/notebook and complete an individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress.
Later in the course there is an opportunity to explore a personal project allowing you the time to develop and interpret your own creative ideas.
You will receive feedback from your tutor throughout the course.

What do I need to bring with me?

First week - All students should bring an A3 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper and a variety of pencils (HB and 2B are ideal).
During the course you will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements.
Please do not buy anything until you are sure the course is running and the tutor will advise you on further purchases at the start of the course.
