This is a course leading to a Functional Skills (FS) qualification. Functional Skills courses can be joined
at any time of the year, although classes start in September. Course levels start from Entry Level 1 and
progress to Level 2.
Functional Skills English classes help you gain the skills to plan and write letters, emails and reports for
work, focusing on spelling, grammar and punctuation and how to formulate your written work so that it
flows logically and sequentially. The course is assessed by two written examinations and these take
place throughout the year. There is also a speaking and listening examination that will be done in the
class.
Functional Skills Plus maths classes cover the skills for everyday tasks, or those required at work.
These skills include measuring distances, calculating areas for home decoration and improvement,
calculating cooking times for recipes, understanding payslips and work rotas. The course is assessed
by one written examination.
Further information regarding the course specification can be in obtained from your tutor once you have
been placed into a class.
Please note: this course will require an initial assessment, regular attendance, a high level of
commitment and at least two hours of home study per week as set by the tutor.

How will I be taught?

The course will be taught in a friendly but focused atmosphere, where your individual needs are
catered for. Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles
and ensure that you achieve your full potential. Teaching and learning are carried out through formally
taught sessions, discussion, group work, and supported with role play, task sheets and resource books,
practice papers, home study, feedback and evaluation.

What do I need to bring with me?

Notebook, pens, pencils and a folder as you will be required to keep a folder of your work.

What can I do next?

This course can enable you to progress to higher levels of Functional Skills* (if appropriate) and
GCSE* (if appropriate) or other study with Kent Adult Education. Specialist advice is available from
your tutor to help you identify the best course for you. Please check www.kentadulteducation.co.uk for
course details.
* Access to higher level courses might be subject to initial assessment.

What do I need to join the course

ESOL courses are available for European Union citizens and those who have lived in the UK for at least three years. Other students are also welcome upon payment of an overseas fee. However, acceptance on a Skills Plus ESOL course does not constitute an immigration sponsorship and no Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) certificate will be issued.
Before enrolling on an ESOL course you will need to complete an initial assessment. Please book an interview by emailing: ash-aec-enquiries@kent.gov.uk
We make every effort to keep our prices as low as possible and therefore regret that we cannot return payments to students who withdraw from a course. When you enrol, please understand that you are agreeing to pay the total price for the whole course, including all outstanding balances should you withdraw.

At the first session of the course, the tutor will set out the commitment necessary to pass your
Functional Skills examination. Functional Skills is suitable if you are seeking employment or career
advancement, wishing to help your children with school work or just looking for a new challenge. It is
also a valuable stepping stone if you want to study GCSE in the future. Please note that you should be
able to follow spoken and written instructions, read handouts/exercises and take part in group
discussions.
