This is an online course delivered using Zoom, in real time with live interaction with your tutor and fellow learners.
This course will focus on exploration and experimentation in drawing and mixed media with an exploratory and experimental approach to making a drawings based on the tutor's own practice.
During the course we will discuss how we look at things and why, starting with drawing skills exploring ‘ways of seeing’. We will employ a range of drawing materials and techniques in a series of engaging exercises and develop an individual response to thematically based work. This is a good introduction painting and drawing courses for those with some experience of drawing and improvers alike designed to encourage creative expression.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Work from a variety of subject matter.
- Select and use the appropriate drawing and painting media, materials and equipment
- Demonstrate and understand relevant drawing and mixed media techniques
- Identify and develop your creative ideas using research and experimentation
- Successfully review and evaluate your own work
- Research and evaluate the work of others to inform your own work and development
- Be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines

Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Cas Holmes
Cas Holmes is an award-winning artist and writer with over thirty years' experience. She trained in the UK at UCA Maidstone and received research fellowships to study in Japan, India and Canada. She teaches internationally and has written 5 books for Batsford on the subject of mixed media/textiles. The most recent are Embroidering the Everyday (2021) and Textile Landscape (2018)
How will I be taught?
This course is online. You will be able to join in person online and be able to exchange and interact with other learners as you would in the classroom (speaking and listening).
Your Tutor, Cas Holmes, will offer a combination of demonstrations and discussion in a workshop- based course where students will be encouraged to work individually in applying techniques and develop ideas in mixed media. For those with more experience, you will learn new techniques and improve your skills further. Learners will explore a variety of painting and drawing techniques and take inspiration from different artists and other sources to inform their work.
What do I need to have with me?
The course is based on using what we have. The tutor will advise as the course progresses, and things can be adapted.
For this course you will need the following (if you have them):-
- Drawing and painting materials you have to hand to work with, please feel free to include unusual things and favoured materials (for example charcoal, sticks, chunky wax crayons
- Scissors
- Masking tape
- Drawing cartridge or watercolour paper (collection of other papers to draw on such as brown wrapping paper.- Sketchbook- Selection of objects for reference (shells, feathers, plants etc)
