Do you want to be able to use your Italian in a range of real life situations? This is the aim of our Italian Upper Intermediate course. You will benefit from exchanging face to face with a supportive tutor and others as you practise speaking and enjoy learning the language.

According to the results of the Initial Assessment and the needs and interests of the group, students should be able to achieve four of the following:

• Describe (people, places, situations, events etc) in the present and past tense
• Make comparisons
• Exchange/extract key information on a variety of topics/situations
• Use the imperative to give and follow instructions
• Make arrangements using different tenses
• Express an opinion
• Express hypothesis ( if clause …)
• Deal with emergencies, problems and complaints
• Listen and respond to information from a range of sources (telephone messages, news headlines/public announcements, instructions, conversations)
• Grasp general meaning of written material (e-mails, mobile text messages, letters, notices, leaflets etc)

Grammar will be expanded. You will learn to use expressions and forms appropriate to the language using present, future and some past tenses. You will be given small amounts of homework (1 hour max) each week to reinforce classroom learning.

How will I be taught?

The focus will be on oral communication (speaking and listening) and some reading and writing will also be included. Pronunciation and Italian culture are an integral part of the course. The course will be conducted mainly in the foreign language. Learners will work through different activities individually, in pairs and in small groups, using a variety of learning methods and resources (role-play and games etc). Homework set will provide an opportunity for self study including the use of on-line resources. Initial assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student's starting point will be recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets will be set. This will be revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress. Tutors will mark homework and give written or verbal feedback.

What do I need to bring with me?

The course book will be discussed at the first session if appropriate. Students will need to bring a pen and paper and an A4 ring binder for handouts, although we advise students not to buy anything until after the first session.

What can I do next?

Students can progress with another Upper Intermediate course. After a year of study, the next course will be an Intermediate Plus course. The tutor or Curriculum Leader can advise on the most suitable course for you, or check www.kentadulteducation.co.uk.
During your course your tutor will offer guidance in relation to your personal progression route. Courses are designed to progress you to further study or into employment. In addition some of our courses support access to Further and Higher Education opportunities. KAE web site has information about these courses and developing your own business. Please speak with your tutor if you have an interest in self-employment or an interest in developing a career. We can also help you access the National Careers service.

What do I need to join the course

For anybody who is looking to improve the practical speaking and listening skills needed to cope with a range of real life situations more complex than those at Lower Intermediate level. This course follows on from our Lower Intermediate course. Students need to either have completed one of our Lower Intermediate courses or have studied GCSE (A/C grades) or have studied the language for approximately 150 hours and who can express themselves and understand information relating to personal, work or social matters. If you are unsure carry out our self-assessment test available on www.kentadulteducation.co.uk. The assessment provides a score to help you chose the best course for you. If still unsure, please feel free to contact us.
