This course will teach you the basics of Sashiko, a type of traditional Japanese embroidery or stitching used for the decorative reinforcement of cloth and clothing. This simple but decorative way of stitching can be used for quilting, or to create pattern in line onto soft furnishings or clothing.
By the end of the course, you will know:
History behind sashiko stitching
How to select fabrics and threads
Marking and stitching the pattern

How will I be taught?

Courses provide an opportunity for students to learn and develop skills, techniques and understand how to design for a chosen craft to a higher level.
Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.
Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising craftspeople.

What do I need to bring with me?

A sewing kit with sharp scissors, pins and some specific sashiko thread in a neutral colour.

Everyone from beginners to those with experience in these processes.
It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity for you to participate fully and get the most out of the course.
