This course will help you extend your creative life drawing and painting skills in a friendly, supportive atmosphere.
You’ll be working with both female and male unclothed models in longer one-to-two hour poses to let you make more developed and considered drawings and paintings.
You’ll be free to work in your preferred media, or to experiment with new materials and approaches. The course is an opportunity to work in a gently guided, collaborative group, where one-to-one tutoring and group discussions will help you build your skills and your personal approach to making art from observation of the human body.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Make sustained drawings or paintings from observation
- Use a variety of approaches, materials and techniques to develop a more personal response in your work
- Extend your understanding of composition, colour, tone and mark-making
- Reflect on your work through observation and discussion to inform your development
- Look at, and take inspiration from, the work and practice of a variety of artists.
The course is a great extension of the Friday morning life drawing class, giving you more a concentrated block of time in the studio to work on depicting a pose.
There’s no formal homework for the course, but you may get more out of the experience if you’re willing to research the artists and ideas discussed in your own time.
There is no qualification for this course (but if you ask nicely, your tutor might make you a certificate, because an artist did that for her once, and it gave her hope).

There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Kim Plowright

Kim Plowright is an artist and creative digital producer. She studied fine art at the only UK art school to still teach human anatomy, but then got distracted and accidentally had a twenty-year career doing TV and internet stuff. She’s worked on digital projects at the intersection of technology, art, games and 'old' media; which have won a BAFTA, an Emmy, several Webbys, and a nomination for the Tate’s IK Prize. She also helped set up the National Film and Television School’s PGDip in Creative Producing for Digital Platforms, and taught on it for five years.
Away from the screen, she has always maintained a secret double life as an artist. Her current practice focuses on drawing, memory and the experience of being-in-the-body. Art has become a way of spotting patterns, and connecting with an instinctive, embodied understanding of the world that can be too easily dismissed. Most recently she’s been combining virtual and traditional drawing, and running online drawing sessions for people who think they can’t draw.
She never fell out of love with drawing, and drawing from the body remains at the root of all of her creative work.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of guided teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and supportive critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and learn about their techniques and approaches. You will keep an individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. You might want to bring a notebook or sketchbook to record your progress, too.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you to the first session. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. You will need to bring paint (acrylic is recommended), a variety of brushes, pot/jar for water and a palette.

What can I do next?

A further life drawing course, or other courses in drawing or painting. The next course starts in January 2022

What do I need to join the course

This is an in-person course.
You will get more out of this course if you have some previous drawing or painting experience, but the tutor will be happy to help beginners make their first steps.
Gentle curiosity and a willingness to contribute to helping each other to make our best work are encouraged.
