This one day Life Drawing course is aimed at a range of abilities and experiences. It will cover a range of approaches to life drawing, e.g. quick poses, exercises that help improve observation, drawing with positive and negative spaces and drawing on the right side of the brain, as well as more formal approaches to study proportion, tone, form and flesh tones. There will be an opportunity to use and experiment with a range of media, both traditional and experimental, e.g. pencil, charcoal, collage, paint, stick and ink.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
Use proportion to increase accuracy of figure drawing
Produce drawings that demonstrate an understanding on tone, i.e. shadows, mid tones and highlights
Produce drawings that demonstrate an understanding of colour theory and a limited palette, i.e. 3 primaries and white to mix flesh tones.
Produce drawings that demonstrate the use of a range of mark making techniques, such as pen and ink, ink and wash, broad charcoal marks, linear charcoal marks, broad brush strokes, translucent washes.
Be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists to place your drawing in context. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.

What do I need to bring with me?

You should bring an A3 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost. If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you, you can buy charcoal, sugar and cartridge paper at the centre on the day if needed.

What do I need to join the course

Anyone who has an interest in learning how to draw from a Life Model. The course aims to be adaptive so that it is appropriate for beginners as well as those who are more experienced.
It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.
