This course will help you develop your creative life drawing skills in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. It’s based on the belief that drawing is a process, that everyone can draw, and there’s no such thing as a bad drawing.
You’ll be working with both female and male unclothed models in order to help you build your fundamental drawing and observation skills and introduce you to some of the basics of human anatomy. You’ll look at how historic and contemporary artists from many traditions have approached drawing the figure.
The course aims to help you get over your fears, and give yourself permission to explore making more expressive and experimental drawings.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- draw more accurately from observation
- draw more expressively from observation
- make drawings of the figure in line and tone
- develop your understanding of anatomy
- use a variety of drawing materials
- look at, and take inspiration from, the work and practice of a variety of artists.
There’s no formal homework for the course, but you may get more out of the experience if you’re willing to research the artists and ideas discussed in your own time.
There is no qualification for this course (but if you ask nicely, your tutor might make you a certificate, because an artist did that for her once, and it gave her hope).

There is free parking on site.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Kim Plowright

Kim Plowright is an artist and creative digital producer. She studied fine art at the only UK art school to still teach human anatomy, but then got distracted and accidentally had a twenty-year career doing TV and internet stuff. She’s worked on digital projects at the intersection of technology, art, games and 'old' media; which have won a BAFTA, an Emmy, several Webbys, and a nomination for the Tate’s IK Prize. She also helped set up the National Film and Television School’s PGDip in Creative Producing for Digital Platforms, and taught on it for five years.
Away from the screen, she has always maintained a secret double life as an artist. Her current practice focuses on drawing, memory and the experience of being-in-the-body. Art has become a way of spotting patterns, and connecting with an instinctive, embodied understanding of the world that can be too easily dismissed. Most recently she’s been combining virtual and traditional drawing, and running online drawing sessions for people who think they can’t draw.
She never fell out of love with drawing, and drawing from the body remains at the root of all of her creative work.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of guided teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and supportive critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and learn about their techniques and approaches. You will keep an individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. You might want to bring a notebook or sketchbook to record your progress, too.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need to provide your own materials which will vary in cost according to the course requirements. All students should bring pencils (one each of HB, 2B, 4B, 6B) and a sharpener, charcoal, a soft eraser, a kneadable putty rubber and either masking tape or board clips. You may want to bring an A4 sketch book for notes.
If you are a new student and have no materials, your tutor will be happy to help you choose what to buy: it’s usually better to buy a few good-quality items rather than larger sets of lower quality stuff. If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate, please bring them with you. For in-person sessions, large sheets of paper are available to buy from the tutor at low cost.

What can I do next?

A further life drawing course, or other courses in drawing or painting.

What do I need to join the course

This course is an in-person session suitable for beginners and improvers.
Gentle curiosity and a joyful willingness to do things badly are encouraged.
