An art course where you will explore the path of Abstraction - a practical study working through Impressionism, Cubism, Expressionism through to American Abstract Expressionism. You will be using a variety of drawing and painting media and materials, e.g. pencil, charcoal, watercolour, acrylic, ink, you will explore a range of techniques, and will gain confidence in using the formal elements - line, tone, colour, texture and composition. By working from both direct observation and from photographic references and sketches, you will encounter a variety of interesting and stimulating subject matter - landscape, still life, natural forms, etc. Reference will also be made to the work of other artists as appropriate.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Work from a variety of primary and secondary subject matter.
Produce a range of drawings and paintings that demonstrate a basic awareness of the formal elements.
Select and use the appropriate media, materials and equipment.
Mix colours using basic colour theory.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Christopher Bone

Christopher Bone MA Fine Art. Chris established a studio in Folkestone in 1985 and has since developed a reputation as an accomplished painter, exhibiting regular in Kent and London. He teaches the principles and techniques of drawing and painting in all mediums, making reference to the history of art as appropriate.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements.

What do I need to join the course

This course would suit a learners with some experience of Art who want to develop their skills.
