This Pilates course will be delivered face-to-face from Broadstairs Adult Education Centre. Pilates is a form of body conditioning that concentrates on building strength from the core of the body. It can help improve posture, muscular strength, mobility and breathing technique. A variety of exercises are performed, flowing smoothly from one to the other whilst focusing on technique and control.

Each class will have a varied theme and will build upon the last class. Themes will include: standing with correct posture; basic knowledge of alignment; breathing patterns; working the abdominals; movements to help improve back and spinal mobility, hip, thigh and leg exercises.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
- To achieve better balance and co-ordination
- To tighten and tone specific muscles and groups of muscles
- To breath correctly
- To achieve a tighter core

You will need to be able to follow verbal instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness within a group.

Although there is no specific work set outside of the class, students will gain most benefit if exercises are performed regularly and practised between classes.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught by a qualified and experienced Pilates tutor. Teaching methods will include demonstration, explanation, discussion and times for question and answer sessions. Your tutor will demonstrate movements and talk you through all sequences. Activities will be adapted to suit individual needs and capabilities. You will be carefully observed to ensure that you are working safely and be encouraged to monitor and record your progression on the course.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need supportive, comfortable clothing that allows ease of movement. Denim jeans, formal trousers, skirts or dress are not suitable for this activity. You will be exercising in socks or bare feet. You may be advised not to take part if you are not dressed appropriately. Students need to bring a mat to work on and may wish to bring a towel.
