This Portraiture course will enable you to work from direct observation of an experienced life model as well as photographic references. You will be introduced to a range of approaches to drawing and painting the human head using a variety of media.
By the end of the course you should be able to:
Make studies of the human head using a range of drawing and painting techniques;
Produce head studies that demonstrate an awareness of scale, perspective and proportion;
Construct form using tone and colour;
Draw and paint portraits with increased confidence and accuracy;
Work to health and safety guidelines.

Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Suzanne May
Suzanne has a BA(Hons) in Graphic Design & Illustration and an MA in Marketing. Throughout her career in visual communication Suzanne has illustrated children’s books, designed corporate identities and brochures for print, exhibited her fine artwork and undertaken art commissions. Her previous teaching experience includes being the sole art tutor at a private girls’ school and conducting various art classes for adults and children in the UK and Australia.
Suzanne’s passion is figurative drawing and painting from observation, particularly the human form, using a variety of media. She enjoys helping others to develop their own artistic vision and ability, and guiding them towards their unique creative potential.
How will I be taught?
Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. You will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.
One to one guidance, group critiques, self-assessment against individualised learning outcomes stated on the Individual Learning Plan.
What do I need to bring with me?
If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements.

What do I need to join the course
Some prior knowledge or experience of drawing and painting is required. This course is not suitable for absolute beginners.
It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity for you to participate fully and get the most out of the course.
