This pottery course in the Deal Pottery Studio will guide your through the whole process of making objects in clay through demonstrations of hand-building, throwing and glazing techniques. You will be able to develop your skills in slabbing, pinching, coiling and throwing. There is a strong emphasis on personal skills development, in the designing and glazing of your work.

Students will have the opportunity to work on individual projects at their own pace and will be given feedback on their progress with professional advice and guidance from the tutor. You will be expected to do some research towards your projects at home. This could be collecting images or drawing out your ideas.


By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Develop your pottery skills and techniques to alter forms and create complex shapes incorporating decorative elements.
- Demonstrate effective use of various pottery tools and equipment, such as carving tools, trimming tools and texture tools to expand creative opportunities.
- Design, make and evaluate 2 or more ceramic forms using personal ideas from research and drawings
- Apply a verity of different types of surface decorating and glazing techniques to your work
- Be aware of and work to health and safety guidelines.

Please note, Clay is charged by the wet weigh, prior to firing. Only clay supplied by Kent Adult Education is allowed in our potteries.
While we aim to fire products in a timely manner, we cannot foresee technical or mechanical failures. When these do occur, we endeavour to resolve them as quickly as possible.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Marilyn Williams

Marilyn has been a pottery tutor with Kent Adult Education for 7 years and has done clay workshops with children for many years.
She is a qualified teacher and has a diploma in ceramics. Marilyn has her own workshop and kiln and sells and exhibits her work around the country and in Open Studios. She uses mainly stoneware clay and specialises in making bird baths and bird vessels. Her influences range from American Indian and Minoan pottery to African art. Her own introduction to clay was through attending an adult education class.

How will I be taught?

Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and craftspeople and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan to record your goals, ideas, processes and progress.

Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.

Your tutor will provide feedback on your work through one to one guidance and group critiques. You will be able to self-assess against your individualised learning outcomes stated on your ILP.
These outcomes will be the basis of all learning. Additional Personal Learning Outcomes can be negotiated with your tutor to better meet your individual needs.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring an overall, shirt or apron and a sketch book or notebook. Your tutor will discuss any other basic pottery tools you may need and where you can purchase these as the course progresses. Clay is paid for by weight at a reasonable rate in class, items must be paid for before they are fired.

Courses are designed to progress students to higher levels of the craft. In addition our courses support application to "Access to Degree Foundation courses" leading to Higher Education opportunities.

What do I need to join the course

This course in Deal is suitable for Learners with experience of hand building and throwing who want to improve. Please not this is not a course for beginners.
It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.
