This course is designed for people with sewing experience to design and make your own individual garments. You will work on your own project at your own pace. The tutor will show you all the processes needed to complete your pattern and guide you to develop and produce a high quality garment. You will progress and develop your understanding and skills which include: choice of patterns, fabric, pattern alterations, measurement and fitting, cutting a variety of fabrics, construction methods e.g. seam finishes, correct pressing for your fabric, sewing darts, invisible, lapped and fly front zips, waistbands and facings, and use of interfacings.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Select and use appropriate resources to measure and design your pattern.
- Cut a final pattern design.
- Produce final individual garments.
- Use sewing techniques as required by your garment pattern.
- Use tools and equipment safely
There is no set ‘homework’, but to get the most out of the course, you are welcome to do further work at home.
There is no qualification for this course.
There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.

Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Diana Withers
Diana Withers has an Art School training in Fashion and Textiles. She has worked in the fashion industry for 15 years as a designer and pattern-cutter and continues to work as a consultant. Her teaching experience has been working at the Fashion Retail Academy and various Adult Education venues. Diana has also assessed apprentices at the Royal Opera House, The Globe Theatre & Savile Row. She is passionate and enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge on clothes making and soft furnishing skills.
How will I be taught?
The tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.
There will be individual and group feedback and self-assessment against individualised learning outcomes stated on your ILP (individual learning plan).
At the beginning of your course, your tutor will undertake an initial assessment to ensure that your course will meet your personal learning journey.
What do I need to bring with me?
Your sewing machine as it is recommended that you get used to using your own machine.
We do have limited number of sewing machines for student use.
Please bring along:
Scissors, tape measure, pins, pattern, fabric, threads, interfacings, buttons and zips.
What can I do next?
During your course, your tutor will offer guidance in your personal progression route.
Courses are designed to progress students to higher levels of the craft. In addition, our courses support application to "Access to Degree Foundation courses" leading to Higher Education opportunities.
Kent Adult Education website offers many courses for students wishing to develop a self-employed business. Please speak with your tutor if you have an interest in self-employment or an interest in developing career options in this chosen craft.
What do I need to join the course
For those with Beginners sewing experience. It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please ask to speak to the Curriculum Leader before you enrol.
