This Sewing course is designed to enable you to gain knowledge and confidence in your sewing skills and in using a sewing machine, in an exciting, fun and informative way.

Students can choose to make a wide variety of projects including simple garments for themselves or their children. The tutor will discuss each students' learning requirements at the start of the course and will advise on the best method of obtaining success with their chosen project.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:-
- Use sewing machine feet to enhance different techniques.
- Choose a commercial pattern for chosen project, learn how to adapt style.
- Learn how to use a pattern and follow instructions making personal decisions construction.
- Try out different ways to lay pattern pieces economically.
- Select different haberdashery components.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Diana Withers

Diana Withers has an Art School training in Fashion and Textiles. She has worked in the fashion industry for 15 years as a designer and pattern-cutter and continues to work as a consultant. Her teaching experience has been working at the Fashion Retail Academy and various Adult Education venues. Diana has also assessed apprentices at the Royal Opera House, The Globe Theatre & Savile Row. She is passionate and enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge on clothes making and soft furnishing skills.

How will I be taught?

Craft courses provide an opportunity for students to learn and develop skills, techniques and understand how to design for a chosen craft. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. At the start of the course you will work with your tutor to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set out what you want to achieve by the end of the course. You will both monitor and assess your progress throughout the course to ensure your learning needs are being met. There are no formal exams or tests to complete on this course.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need to bring small sewing equipment, such as sharp scissors for cutting fabric, pins, needles, a tape measure, chalk fabric pencil, sewing threads to match fabrics; a retractable metal tape measure; a folder, paper and pens for notes and handouts.

Please bring some fabric suitable for making a small item such as a cushion cover during the first lesson, or for any other project you wish to start on.

There are some sewing machines available for student use. However please bring your own machine if you wish to. Don't forget to bring all the accessories, foot controls and leads for the machine. IMPORTANT! Any equipment brought in by students must be in full working order and clean. The Tutor will not be able to carry out any repairs.

You will be able to take further courses or take on a specific project class.

What do I need to join the course

The class is suitable for those who have some experience or have completed our recent Beginners course. It is NOT for absolute beginners.
