Learn to sew clothes using a paper pattern. If this is your first class with us you will make a skirt which can be for yourself or someone else, it is primarily a learning project which can be made from cheap fabric. This will enable you to cover a variety of sewing skills involved in constructing a garment.

Students who have attended courses before can select their own project, if you want to discuss a suitable pattern beforehand please contact us at Dartfordaec@kent.gov.uk

New students please ensure you buy one of the skirt patterns listed below so that everyone is working on the same project. You can make this from cheap sheeting as a practice of the techniques if you don't want to wear it.

You will be given instruction on using your sewing machine, understanding commercial pattern instructions along with correct pinning and cutting techniques.

By the end of the course most students will be able to :-
- Show how to follow a pattern layout
- Explain how to match the grain line on a pattern piece to the grain of the fabric
- Explain what the notches and dots marked on patterns are used for and how to transfer them to the fabric
- Demonstrate how to insert a zip
- Explain how to sew on a waistband
- Explain the health and safety considerations for the equipment you are using

How will I be taught?

Craft courses provide an opportunity for students to learn and develop skills, techniques and understand how to design for a chosen craft. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. At the start of the course you will work with your tutor to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set out what you want to achieve by the end of the course. You will both monitor and assess your progress throughout the course to ensure your learning needs are being met. There are no formal exams or tests to complete on this course.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need:
-A pen, pencil and notebook,
-A basic sewing kit,
-Scissors, pins and a tape measure,
-Your own sewing machine if you have one, please bring all leads and the foot pedal
- Pattern and fabric, see below

New students -
Please purchase either the Burda 8155 Pencil skirt or Simplicity 2314 A line skirt. If there is any problem with this please let us know as soon as possible.
Check the back of the pattern for details of fabric, interfacings, thread buttons, zips etc most shop assistants will be able to assist you.

Note: these are multisize patterns, if you would like to make the skirt for yourself and think you may need a different size please get in touch and we will advise on an alternative. You will take your measurements in class to determine which size to use, please don't cut anything out before the class.

Returning students -
Please buy a pattern you would like to make which is appropriate to your ability level, if you have made a skirt already, then trousers or a blouse like New Look 6197 would be a good next step, you can contact us at Dartfordaec@kent.gov.uk to discuss this if you would prefer.

For safety only closed toes shoes should be worn.

What can I do next?

Your Tutor will be able to advise on another Clothesmaking, basic skills or Craft sewing class
