Instruction will be given on using your sewing machine and understanding commercial pattern instructions, correct pinning and cutting techniques and taking measurements.

By the end of the course most students will be able to :-
- Demonstrate how to thread a sewing machine and stitch a straight line
- Explain how to make and press an open seam and dart
- Demonstrate how to insert a zip
- Explain how to sew on a waistband
- Explain the health and safety considerations for the equipment you are using

How will I be taught?

Craft courses provide an opportunity for students to learn and develop skills, techniques and understand how to design for a chosen craft. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. At the start of the course you will work with your tutor to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set out what you want to achieve by the end of the course. You will both monitor and assess your progress throughout the course to ensure your learning needs are being met. There are no formal exams or tests to complete on this course.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need:
-A pen, pencil and notebook,
-A basic sewing kit,
-Scissors, pins and a tape measure,
-Your own sewing machine if you have one,
-A pattern for a garment you wish to make, if you are a beginner please select one marked as easy, a good choice to learn basic skills would be a skirt with zip and waistband.
Check the back of the pattern for details of fabric, interfacings, thread buttons, zips etc most shop assistants will be able to assist you.

Note: take your measurements before selecting a pattern, dress sizes for patterns are usually bigger than high street sizes e.g. if you usually wear a 12 you may need a size 16 in a sewing pattern and this may effect the mount for fabric you need.

For safety only closed toes shoes should be worn.

What can I do next?

You will be able to take further courses or take on a specific project class.

What do I need to join the course

Everyone is welcome. It is important to note that craft courses are practical requiring a degree of manual dexterity and students will need to participate fully to get the most out of the course. This is a mixed level class, beginners and more experienced students are all welcome. Students will work at an appropriately challenging level on their own projects.
