This course at Folkestone Adult Education Centre Cube Tontine Street Folkestone Kent aims to expand a learner's knowledge of the Ukulele and its repertoire..

Students will learn new pieces for Ukulele while simultaneously widening their knowledge of the key composers for the instrument.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
• Hold the Ukulele comfortably
• Identify the names of the open strings of the ukulele
• Play and memorise the basic chord shapes
• Sight read simple pieces of music
• Learn new songs using written sheet music format
• Play simple strumming patterns
• Play simple melodies on the ukulele
• Perform a small repertoire of pieces/songs from memory
To benefit fully from this course, students are advised to practice the exercises and pieces in their own time.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: James Rowdon

James Rowdon was born in Dorset and studied both jazz and classical styles of guitar. He obtained a degree in contemporary music from Canterbury Christ Church University and takes great pride in seeing his students succeed on the guitar. James performs frequently throughout South East Kent in jazz and afrobeat ensembles, as well as performing solo classical guitar at local events.

How will I be taught?

Students will be taught both as a group and one to one, with opportunities to perform and practice. The tutor will give detailed instructions and demonstrations. To benefit fully from this course, students are advised to practice the chords, scales, exercises and pieces in their own time. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will keep a notebook and update an individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress.

What do I need to bring with me?

Learners will need their own Ukulele and tuner. The tuner can be either shop-bought or downloaded onto their phone/tablet. A music stand is advised to promote good posture. Optional extras include a strap for the ukulele, a footstool and a Capo. Learners should have a working setup at home for online

What do I need to join the course

You will need your own ukulele, but no experience is necessary.

The course is aimed at beginners. If you have already been playing for a short time but still consider yourself a beginner, that is fine too, jjust be aware that the course will start from the basics.
