About this course

Jane Austen lived at the turn of the 19th century and her novels offer insights into life in England during a period of rapid change and social uncertainty. The Regency period saw economic depression and rapid industrial expansion, during which the balance of society was shifting and women such as Mary Wollstonecraft and Caroline Norton began to challenge their position within it. This course will offer the opportunity to examine some of Austen’s novels in an attempt to discover more about the world she inhabited – its landscape, society and culture - and her unique view of it.

The second part to this course is a walking tour of Austen’s Tonbridge. Jane’s father was born in Tonbridge and many members of the wider family lived and worked in the town. This short walk (approximately 2 miles) takes in some of the Austen family homes, Tonbridge School (where her father was both pupil and teacher) and the Church of SS. Peter &Paul, in which some of the family worshipped and are buried. (Please wear comfortable footwear).

By the end of this course, you should be able to
• Place Jane Austen within the wider context of British history
• Describe key events in political, social and cultural history of the Regency period
• Assess the value of literature as historical evidence

(It is not essential, but might be useful, to have read one or both of the following texts before beginning this course: Pride and Prejudice; Sense and Sensibility)
