About this course

Walking is at its most enjoyable when we feel confident that we know where we are and, just as important, where we are going. Confident navigation involves the ability to orientate and interpret a map correctly. You will be studying with our partner Contours and Cairns who have many years experience in navigating the great outdoors both at home and abroad. Their website is www.contoursandcairns.co.uk.
The course is run over two consecutive days, Sat 21st and Sun 22nd May 2016. There are six hours of tuition per day plus half an hour for lunch.
At the end of the course you will be able to:
* Devise a strategy for a navigational stage, to break it down into 'coarse' and 'fine' navigation and to use clear features en route to check that they are 'on course'.
* Demonstrate an understanding of contour features, both large and small, on the map and on the ground.
* Judge distance accurately on the map and on the ground.
* Employ simple relocation strategies when lost.
* Use a compass to follow accurate bearings and to check the direction of footpaths or other linear features on both map and ground.

The course will take place away from the Centre and so you will need to be able to travel independently. The tutor will write to you and confirm details about 10 days before the course is due to start.

One student said, 'Stuart’s style of teaching was relaxed and informative and he tailored it perfectly to each individual’s needs. I felt I gained in confidence at map reading and actually enjoyed it enormously.'

How will I be taught?

There will primarily be outdoor tuition and all elements can all be completed in the field. We will walk roughly 12km (8 miles) per day. We will meet at Ditchling Beacon on the Saturday and Alfriston Village on the Sunday. The tutor will contact you just before the course to finalise the arrangements.

What do I need to bring with me?

Maps and compasses and any other materials will be provided.
You should bring the following:
• Sturdy walking boots/shoes
• Waterproof jacket and trousers
• Warm gloves and hat
• An extra warm layer
• Drinking bottle (at least 1 litre)
• Packed lunch and snacks
• Small day rucksack (say 25 litres)
• Personal medication
• Sunblock as appropriate (and sunhat?)
You should also bring a pen and small notepad.

What can I do next?

Students from this course can go on to take the Gold Award. If they wish they could eventually go on to undertake training and assessment for the Walking Group and Mountain Leader qualifications through MLT UK.

What do I need to join the course

Previous experience of map use, with or without a compass, is recommended. That may have been on local footpaths or further afield in the National Parks of the UK. This is also the ideal development from the Bronze level NNAS course.
Potential students should note that these are a personal performance awards and are not a qualification to lead groups.
The course is suitable for keen ramblers who would like to be more confident when following trails in the National Parks of the UK. It will be of benefit to anyone who wishes to be able to plan and follow routes in the countryside whether that be on lowland areas or the higher fells and mountains. It will provide useful extra knowledge and experience for those who have already attended one or more of our map reading and navigation courses. Please note that this course does not include the use of GPS.

Participants will need to be able to walk roughly 12 km (8 miles) each day.
