About this course

Realism, especially in France, was a progressive movement in the nineteenth century. This course will explore its interest with social realities of the time and rejection of Academic art and Romanticism. It will emphasis the significance of the actions and art of Gustave Courbet; such as his manifesto Le Réalisme and how he challenged the establishment by setting up his own exhibition in his ‘Pavilion of Realism’ within sight of a major exhibition in 1855. Subsequent influences of the movement on social change and individuals’ rights will also be examined. Artists to be considered include: Gustave Courbet, Jean-Francois Millet, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Théodore Rousseau and Edouard Manet.

By the end of the course students will be able to…..
