About this course

This course is for complete beginners and for students with some experience who have not yet learned the Uncial hand.
The Uncial hand is an excellent hand for beginners to learn about basic penmanship. Penmanship is the essential skill you need to make beautiful writing, or calligraphy.

Using the ancient & beautiful Uncial hand as a model, you will assemble your own personal folder with all you need to know to embark on your calligraphic journey.
You will start from scratch exploring the mystery of pen angle and drawing pen patterns, which are a fun and creative way to get to know the calligraphy pen. These provide useful border decoration whilst gently introducing you to some of the pen strokes that help to make the letterforms. Learn how to rule lines the right size apart, with simple tricks. Examine the broad-edged dip pens and how to prepare them. Then write the Uncial letter forms, studied in shape groups.
Uncials will help us learn about slope, pen angle, arch formation, length of ascenders & descenders, and letter- and word spacing.
Finally, you will put your writing to practical use by writing: names, place cards, short phrases, an address on an envelope, a Christmas card and the like.
This will all go into your personal folder which will include paper samples and handouts, so you’ll know where to go from here.

Homework between sessions (at least 2 hours per week) is essential to practice what you have learned in class and to develop your personal project further

By the end of the course you should be able to:
• Set up your workspace efficiently
• Prepare and handle dip pens
• Select good ink & paper for your writing
• Rule accurate guidelines for the Uncial Hand
• Write good Uncial letters
• Produce even letter- and word spacing
• Arrange names/messages/text on a page with due attention to layout and margins
• Write Uncial numbers
• Use the building, tools and materials safely and responsibly

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, handouts, one-to-one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical scribes and calligraphers and you will keep a work folder and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance personal skills. You will receive one-to-one feedback throughout your course.
