About this course

In a supportive, encouraging environment, you will be taught simple, effective techniques for creating your own drawings and paintings. Returning students will develop their skills further and learn new techniques. You will take inspiration from a range of primary and secondary resources. There will also be scope for you to explore your own areas of interest and begin to develop an individual approach to this rewarding subject.

By the end of the course you should be able to;
• Make drawings with a focus on either tone, line or texture with more accuracy
• Use a range of colours effectively using basic colour theory
• Use water-based paint with increasing confidence
• Recognise and respond to the work of artists covered in the course

There is no set 'homework' but you are welcome to practise and do further work at home.
There is no qualification for this course.

There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.

How will I be taught?

Each class will start with a practical demonstration followed by a question and answer session to ensure good understanding. You will receive plenty of one to one guidance, further demonstration where necessary and group discussions of work in progress.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, a 2B pencil and a rubber to the first session. If you do not have these already, please do not buy anything specifically for the course until you have checked with the Canterbury Centre, on 03000 41 2222 about a week before the start, that the course will be going ahead. Students will need to provide their own materials as the course progresses.

What can I do next?

The follow-on course or another art course with KAE.

What do I need to join the course

This course is designed for students who have little or no previous experience of art, and help them to get started. The course is practical so a degree of manual dexterity is required.
